National Finals Rodeo qualifier and Barrel Futurities of America world champion Jordon Briggs can add another championship to her rather large resume. The Lott, Texas, cowgirl is no stranger to the pay window, and she cashed in big to open the two-week Texas Extreme Barrel Classic in Edna, TX, this past weekend. Briggs rode 5-year-old KN Hoppy Ta Be to the futurity championship and is gearing up for what she is hoping to be a successful year.

KN Hoppy Ta Be "Kinder" is by the immortal Dash Ta Fame and out of Docs Smooth Gold by Smooth Herman and is a product of breeder Kimi Nichols phenomenal breeding program.

"I had been looking for a Dash Ta Fame mare in the body type I personally like for a couple years when I saw 'Kinder' on Facebook," Briggs said. "Kimi (Nichols) posted her sale colts for the LG Pro Classic Sale, and I immediately fell in love with her pedigree and knew that I had to have her."

It was another great horse that Briggs trained and futuritied, Frenchmans Future, that made Briggs' dream a reality.

"Frenchmans Future won second in the slot race that year at the LG Pro Classic and bought her for us," Briggs said. "She was 3 years old and pretty small and immature-bodied. After taking her home and riding her, I felt that she had all the talent in the world, so I knew waiting to run her as a 5-year-old futurity horse would pay off."

The Texas Extreme Barrel Classic, produced by WrapN3 and 321 Action Video, is a new futurity for 2017 and one that exceeded all expectations.

"Renee Spiller has always been one of my favorite barrel racing producers," Briggs said. "She runs a tight ship that runs fast, and she is so reasonable on her entry fees and late fees. I was very impressed by the event and the facility at Edna."

Briggs and the exceptionally talented mare finished second in the first round of the futurity with a 16.404, behind Mitzi Mayes and Famous Willow's time of 16.363 seconds.

Already proving to be a consistent futurity horse this early in the season, Briggs and Kinder also captured second place in the second round with a 16.369, trailing Lindsey McLeod's run of 16.275 while riding Boom Goes The Fame.

Briggs and Kinder's total time on two runs of 32.773 seconds was all they needed to seal the win.

"[Kinder] had two very solid runs," Briggs said. "She zones in on the first barrel a little too much sometimes and cut my pocket off in the first round, but other than that, she worked outstanding and I couldn't be happier with her performance and how she is coming along."

Briggs cashed in close to $7,500 along with winning a beautiful belt buckle and a framed picture from the weekend.

Briggs thanked all who support her, including her husband and sponsors: Classic Equine, Rock N Roll Cowgirl, Horse Hair Analysis, Rodeo Rigs PHT Magnetic, and Shiloh Saddlery.

The two-week barrel racing event will conclude this week with the Ultimate Texas Barrel Classic on Thursday, Jan. 5, to Sunday, Jan. 8, which will feature the $30,000 added Isabella Futurity.
