Jordan Bassett is no stranger to winning at the South Buckeye Equestrian Center in Buckeye, Arizona. The 26-year-old Arizona native has been notching victories in the arena as far back as her high school days. She won the PacWest Futurity in 2014 aboard her horse Cocomo Jo, and in 2015, Bassett made over $40,000 in that same arena while riding Buggin To Be Fab. This year, Bassett rode Webb Ranch's Mimis On Firewater to the futurity championship at the Classic Equine Futurity on Sunday.

Mimis On Firewater, or "Honey," is a 5-year-old palomino mare by the legendary Dash Ta Fame and out of Firewater Fanny by Firewater Flit. Firewater Fanny herself was a winning mare, earning over $350,000 in her barrel racing career as well as helping Amanda Clayman qualify to the NFR, and now she is passing her winning ways down to her offspring.

This past weekend, Bassett and Honey blazed the cloverleaf pattern in 17.145 seconds to win the first round and put them in a good position going into round two.

[Honey] ran great," Bassett said. "She got around the first great and we may have overturned it a hair which caused us to be a little too far out going into the second barrel, which is always a scary thought for me because I knew she was going to come back on the backside of the barrel super hard, which she did.

"I knew from the first time that I had ridden her that she was going to fit my style. She is a big mare and she loves to turn. She can be a bit of a handful out back or on the ground, but when she turns toward the alley, her head drops and she is all business. It is a very cool feeling, and I am very thankful for the opportunity to get to ride such a talented horse."

In the second round, Bassett knew she wanted to make a smooth, clean run and let the cards fall where they may.

I had the same game plan that I did in round one as I did in round two," Bassett said. "I wanted to stay smooth, stay square and not get too aggressive. We ran a 17.325 and finished fifth in the second round and were fortunate to get the average win.

Aside from winning the first round and placing fifth in the second round, Bassett and Honey also finished second in the slot race behind Hallie Hanssen and UX Kimmitted Ta Fame. Bassett's total earnings at the Classic Equine Futurity aboard Honey were $19.479.

In addition to her futurity championship, Bassett also split fourth and fifth in the derby aboard both Buggin To Be Fab and Streamline Jazzy to earn $1,280.
