Rodeo Recap: Jacobs Crawley Scored 92 Points & Fabiano Vieira Won Columbus

Warm weather, new arena records, and a whole lot of cash for rodeo competitors. What more could you want from the last rodeo weekend in April?

Crawley Breaks Arena Record At Corpus Christi

It was going to take 90 points to win the already-tough saddle bronc riding at the Corpus Christi PRCA rodeo, but Jacobs Crawley, who's been outright killing it this year, thought he’d throw a few extra points on the board just to be safe. Aboard Frontier Rodeo’s Maple Leaf, Crawley posted a 92-point score—a rarity in the bronc riding—to take home the $5,612 first-place prize in Corpus Christi, Texas.

“When they have their own halter, it’s usually a good sign,” Crawley said in an Instagram post about getting on the 2013 PRCA World Champion Saddle Bronc Horse Of The Year.

The 92-point ride is a new record for Corpus Christi. According to the PRCA’s “For The Record," Bradley Harter and Rusty Wright originally held the record of 91 points with their rides made in 2009 and 2016, respectively. As of April 23, Maple Leaf was also leading the way for the highest scored ride of 2018 in the PRCA, this time with Brody Cress back at the Montgomery, Alabama, PRCA rodeo in mid-March.

Now the 10-year-old mare will hold two spots in the list of rank saddle bronc rides with the 92-point score.

Vieira & Montanha Jr. Split Final Round At Columbus PBR Event With 90.75-Point Scores

Fabiano Vieira and Claudio Montanha Jr. split the round win at the Columbus Invitational—part of the 25th PBR: Unleash The Beast Tour in Columbus, Ohio—with their matching 90.75-point rides. Vieira’s final ride, coupled with a strong performance in the previous rounds, gave him the event win, $37,500, 565 world points, and moves him from 25th to a much more comfortable 12th in the PBR standings.

According to the PBR’s Kacie Albert, Vieira is also the first in the series to make the eight-second whistle on K-C Bucking Bulls/Joe & Nina Webb’s "Big Black."

He started the event at No. 1 in the standings, and that’s where Claudio Montanha Jr. would stay. A buck off on the first night of the event meant he wouldn’t win the championship, but Montanha Jr. battled back on day two to make two great rides, including splitting the championship round win with Vieira.

Montanha Jr.’s rides aboard M Rafter E Bucking Bulls’ “Monster Jam” in round two and “Acting Crazy” (By Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Staci Wilks/N Bar Ranch) in the championship round earned $10,150 and 160 world points for his efforts at Columbus.

All Season Leaders Hold Strong Through April—Except One

All but one season leader remains in the No. 1 position after the month of April. As of April 1, the season leaders were Tuf Cooper (all-around), Caleb Bennett (bareback), Cole Edge (steer wrestling), Clay Smith (team roping header), Paul Eaves (team roping heeler), Jacobs Crawley (saddle bronc), Blane Cox (tie-down roping), Hailey Kinsel (barrel racing), and Sage Kimzey (bull riding).

After the results from the final weekend of competition in April came in, all held strong but one. Tie-down roper Tyson Durfey—who had been on a roll that included a win at Rodeo Austin in March, then a big check at the RNCFR in early April that brought him up to the No. 2 spot behind Tuf Cooper—kept his roll going all through April and now has the No. 1 spot in the world standings.

In fact, Durfey won the most in April out of all of the season leaders (single event) with $24,146.04 in earnings.
