45 Years, 50 Canadian Titles, $1.65M: The Numbers Of The CFR

We love to look at the leaderboard and crunch numbers here at FloRodeo, but we thought we'd look at those numbers a little differently for CFR45.

45 Years, 50 Canadian Titles, $1.65M: The Numbers Of The CFR

We've been all about the numbers lately at FloRodeo, and can you blame us when some events at the end of the both the CPRA and PRCA rodeo seasons came down to dollars and cents?

Watch the Canadian Finals Rodeo LIVE on FloRodeo October 30 to November 4.

In the spirit of crunching numbers, we thought we'd look at them a little differently for CFR45. So we've crunched numbers of a different variety for you to give you a rundown of how this event is shaping up.

1st Year In Red Deer

This will be the event’s inaugural appearance in Red Deer, Alberta — an opportune location with 2.9 million people that live within an hour and a half of the new home of the Canadian Finals Rodeo. Read more about the new venue HERE.

4 World Champions

World Champions Levi Simpson, Jeremy Buhler, Zeke Thurston, and Shane Hanchey will all be competing at this year’s Canadian Finals Rodeo.

6 Performances

The Canadian Finals Rodeo will continue to have a six-round format with performances going each night from October 30 to November 3, and a matinee performance on November 4 that will crown the Canadian champions.

10 Rookies

There will be 10 competitors that have just completed their first full season in the CPRA competing at the Canadian Finals Rodeo this year. These “true rookies” include Dawson Hay in the saddle bronc, Bertina Olafson and Justine Elliott in the barrel racing, as well as Tuftin Mcleod, Tyce Mcleod, and Brenten Hall in the team roping.

The bull riding has the most rookies competing with four finishing in the top 12: Cody Lee Coverchuk, JB Moen, Nick Tetz, and Austin Nash.

12 Canadian Titles For Cassidy

The competitor with the most Canadian titles at the CFR this year is Curtis Cassidy with a whopping 12 titles to his name. Cassidy is a multi-event specialist who won the tie-down roping title in 2001, the steer wrestling in 2006 and 2010 and a total of nine high point titles throughout his career.

He’ll have a chance at the triple crown this year after a last-ditch effort at the tail end of the CPRA season saw Cassidy qualifying for both the tie-down roping and steer wrestling, which will also give him a good chance to claim a tenth high point title.

18 Americans

There are 18 Americans that qualified for CFR45 this year out of the 96 possible spots into the finals. A third of those competitors hail from Texas, while the others come from states like Wyoming, Nebraska, North Dakota, Montana, and Utah.

50 Canadian Titles

The competitors at the 2018 CFR hold a combined 50 Canadian titles between them. Of those 50, eight reigning champions will compete this year: Layton Green (saddle bronc), Seth Hardwick (bareback), Logan Bird (tie-down roping), Carman Pozzobon (barrel racing), Jeremy Buhler (team roping heeler), Levi Simpson (team roping header), Ky Marshall (all-around), and Morgan Grant (high-point).

78 Canadians

The Canadian contingent is a strong one this year with 78 Canadian residents qualifying for the finals. CPRA rodeos offer big money and great bucking stock that entices many competitors from other countries to head north of the border to compete each year, and the Canucks held their own with all of these qualifiers from the home country.

45 Years

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Canadian Finals Rodeo and #CFR45’s first year of a 10-year contract to be in the city of Red Deer.

10,000 Fans

The Westerner Park facility can hold approximately 10,000 fans a night between the arena and the adjacent cabaret building.

$1.65 Million

The purse has grown this year from $1.61 in 2017 to $1.65 million for the inaugural showing in Red Deer, meaning the competitors have over a million reasons to be hitting the gym, in the practice pen, and scratching up that spur board to get ready for CFR45!
