Rising Star: Blair & Briar Mabry, Timed Event Specialists

Having siblings in rodeo means you always have a built-in practice buddy, sometimes a critic, and always a great fan cheering you on. Brothers Briar and Blair Mabry have exactly that as both boys successful hit the National Little Britches and National High School/Junior High rodeo trails as travel companions, team roping partners, and rivals.

“I am fortunate this year to get to team rope with my little brother, Blair,” big brother Briar said. “We are finally in the same age division and while it can be tough mentally, to have that added pressure of roping with your little brother, it’s also pretty cool to get to rope together. He’s an automatic practice partner and traveling partner.”

Little brother Blair couldn’t agree more.

“There is sometimes a lot of pressure because he’s my brother and I want to do good for his sake, so that can be tough, but we have a great opportunity to be successful together,” Blair said. “We already travel together so we might as well compete together!”

In many of these rodeo families, there are also proud parents in the stands cheering on the kids as they learn the art of being a rodeo cowboy or cowgirl. The Mabry family is no exception with mom, Frann, clearly showing pride in her two boys.

“They practice together, they compete together and against each other,” Frann said. “You will never see one of them compete and the other one is not pushing the other's calf, or helping with his horse in the box.

“They have a special brother bond that is cool to watch,” she said.

Blair and Briar are on the team roping list on FloRodeo’s The Rank, and will no doubt continue to climb and join the list in other events. Find out more about the #mabrybrothers in their Rising Star profiles below.

How did you get started in rodeo?

I’ve always wanted to be a cowboy. My dad is a cowboy, my grandfathers were cowboys. I never really knew anything else. I started rodeing when I was 4 with the Southern Tennessee All-Star Rodeo junior rodeo association in middle Tennessee. I won my first all-around champion title and saddle in kindergarten, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

What are some of your biggest accomplishments to date?

  • 2018 Reserve Alabama Little Britches Rodeo Association all-around champion
  • Three-time (2017-2019) National Little Britches Finals Rodeo qualifier

What do you like to do when you're not competing?

I enjoy hunting and fishing. We are lucky enough to have several farms in our family, and we hunt a lot: deer, turkey, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, coyote. I also enjoy helping out on the family cattle farms. I help tend to the herds, feed, and take care of the cows.

When I was little. My dad and grandfathers are/were cowboys. I spent my years before starting school moving and chasing cows on my grandfather's farm on my horse, and I loved every minute of it. I started competing in junior rodeo at age 3 at the Southern Tennessee All-Star Rodeo in middle Tennessee. I won my first all-around champion title and saddle in pre-school at the age of 4, and I’ve never looked back!
